Like any other mechanism, door locks can stop working at any time. We've put together a handy step-by-step guide to help you solve the problem yourself.
If you're having difficulty using the lock, then there are some simple steps that might free things up.
The key is hard to turn
Check your key: we know it sounds simple, but make sure you're using the right key! If you need to lift the door handle before locking/unlocking, try pushing it down and then lifting it again
Lubricate the lock: lubricate the lock with graphite spray or a silicone-based lubricant
Call a locksmith: if none of the above help, there may be a problem with the lock cylinder or a misalignment of the lock and door. Unfortunately, both usually require the expertise of a locksmith
The key is stuck
Pull: grasp the key firmly and with your free hand, push around the keyhole. If you can't get a good grip, try using fliers but be gentle to avoid breaking the lock
Call a locksmith: if the key doesn't come out easily, don't force it or you may end up making things worse. At this stage, you should call a locksmith as they'll have the tools necessary to extract the key
The key won't go into the lock
Check your key: again, the first thing to check is whether you're using the right key!
Defrost: if it's been cold, the lock may be frozen. Gently heat the key and insert it gradually into the keyhole. Repeat as necessary until the ice has melted
Lubricate: lubricate the lock with graphite spray or a silicone-based lubricant
Inspect key: if it's a new key, it may have rough spots that need to be filed off. Ask a reputable locksmith to do this
Use another key: if you have another key for the lock, use it to work out if the problem lies with the key or the lock
Call a locksmith: if the lock is faulty, you'll need a locksmith to investigate this.
