According to a recent study by More Th>n, over 2.8 million work days are lost every year due to home emergencies including broken boilers, loss of heating and hot water, as well as burst pipes and blocked drains.
Having home emergency cover and insurance in place before the worst happens is therefore the best solution to ensuring you’re not left out of pocket or facing a negative impact at work.
The study found that over half (52%) of respondents had experienced a home emergency at some point in their lives, with 29% of those having been affected in the last three years.
The most common issues homeowners have encountered are losing heating and hot water, faulty plumbing and burst pipes. Despite the effect this can have on your home and family life, over half of the respondents (55%) found it difficult to find a qualified trades person who could fix the problem quickly and to a good standard. Three in ten of those questioned confirmed that the time it had taken them to find the right tradesperson resulted in more damage to their home.
Although you may be covered by your home insurance, these plans generally don’t cover mechanical or electrical faults and breakdowns and while they usually cover the damage caused by a home emergency, they don’t necessarily cover the repair of the emergency itself. This is where home emergency insurance comes in.
Home emergency cover policies give you peace of mind that in the event of a domestic emergency, you can call a dedicated claims team who have access to an extensive network of fully qualified tradesmen who are ready to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, resolving the situation and preventing any further damage to your home.
Almost half of the people surveyed had to take time off work to deal with an emergency and a further 14% of those claimed that they were told off by their bosses as a result. Having household breakdown cover in place makes it easier to find a reliable trades person to complete the work, reducing the disruption to your life.
