Unblocktober is an annual campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of keeping our drains and sewers clear of blockages. The campaign encourages people to take simple steps to prevent blockages and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our waterways and oceans.
Why is it important to prevent drain blockages?
Blocked drains can cause a range of problems, from unpleasant odours and slow draining sinks to overflowing toilets and serious flooding. They can also lead to environmental pollution and harm aquatic life. In addition, clearing blocked drains can be costly, time-consuming, and inconvenient.
According to research, around 2,650 domestic pipes burst each year, causing £50 million in damages.
What can you do to prevent drain blockages?
Here are some simple steps you can take to prevent drain blockages:
Avoid flushing or pouring any non-degradable or greasy waste down the sink or toilet, including food scraps, cooking oils, wipes, sanitary products, and chemicals. Instead, use a bin or recycling centre to dispose of them safely.
Install a drain cover or strainer in your sink, shower, and bath to catch hair, soap scum, and other debris that can accumulate and cause blockages.
Use a drain cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to clean your drains regularly and prevent build-up. Avoid using harsh chemicals or hot water, which can damage the pipes and worsen the blockage.
Allow oil and grease to cool after cooking and then dispose of them in a bin or recycling centre. Do not pour them down the sink, as they can solidify and cause blockages.
By taking out a Plumbing and Drainage policy, you can keep family life running smoothly, knowing you’re covered in the event of a burst pipe, blocked external drain and blocked toilet.
